WHMIS & HHPS SYMBOLS Science Safety LEARNING GOALS 1. We are learning the meaning of WHMIS symbols. 2. We are learning the importance of WHMIS & MSDS information.

3. We are understanding the difference between WHMIS & HHPS. Vinegar is a common household chemical that is produced by

diluting (watering down) acetic acid. As shown on the left, this chemical is used to make a variety of products.

WHAT IS WHMIS? Stands for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. An internationally recognized system that describes hazards associated with certain materials. Uses symbols found on supplier labels that identify the risks associated with each material, first aid when

necessary and how to properly handle the material. SAMPLE SUPPLIER LABEL WHMIS SYMBOLS

Poisonous & Infectious Material Causing Immediate & Serious Toxic Effects WHMIS SYMBOLS CONTD Poisonous and Infectious MaterialBiohazardous Causing Other Toxic Effects

Infectious Material WHMIS SYMBOLS CONTD Corrosive Material Dangerously Reactive Material

WHMIS labels provide detailed information about how to store, handle, and dispose of chemical substances. The labels also provide first aid information.

MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET After examining the sample MSDS on the left, list the information that

an MSDS must include. HAZARDS IN THE HOME WHAT IS HHPS? Stands for HouseHold Product Safety. A list of symbols used for common household items.

HHPS SYMBOLS Corrosive Material This product will burn skin or eyes on contact. Throat and stomach if swallowed.

Explosive Material This container can explode if it is heated or punctured. HHPS SYMBOLS CONTD Flammable Material

This product, or its fumes, will catch fire easily if exposed to heat, flames or sparks. Poisonous Material Licking, eating, drinking or sometimes smelling this product is

likely to cause illness or death. HHPS SEVERITY LEVELS Has three levels of severity based on the border of the symbol: Caution is the least severe and danger is the most severe.

LEARNING GOALS 1. We are learning the meaning of WHMIS symbols. 2. We are learning the importance of WHMIS & MSDS information. 3. We are understanding the difference between WHMIS & HHPS.
